International Driver's License

Using an international driver's license

International driving licenses issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention are accepted.

A valid passport and a valid international driver’s license issued by an authorized agency in your country are required to be presented at the time of use.

The validity of an international driver’s license is one year from the date of issue, and the validity of driving in Japan is one year from the date of entry (check the stamp on the passport with the date of entry into Japan). However, if a person who is recorded in the Japanese Basic Resident Register re-enters Japan within less than three months of leaving the country, the date of re-entry will not be counted as the “date of landing (the starting date of the validity of driving in Japan).”

In addition, international driver’s licenses obtained from member countries of the Paris Convention, Washington Convention, and Vienna Convention are not permitted to drive in Japan.

Use of foreign driver's licenses

Foreign driver’s licenses issued in eligible countries and regions (Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan) can be used.

When using this service, you will need to present a Japanese translation of your driver’s license and your passport at the same time.

Regarding Japanese translations, only those issued by the following organizations are valid.

The validity of your driving permit in Japan is within the validity period of your foreign driver’s license and is one year from the date of entry (check the stamp on your passport with the date of entry into Japan). However, if you are registered in the Japanese Basic Resident Register and re-enter Japan within less than three months of leaving the country, the date of re-entry will not be counted as the “date of landing (the starting date of your driving permit in Japan).”
